Hmmm.
I wonder how this will change the "culture" of the show, having an out Lesbian judge. Hopefully, American Idol's heterosexist machinery of fame can get an adjustment, and become a bit more homo-friendly!
For me, Paula had heart. A messy, soppy mess of a big heart, and she CARED. She cared so much about the contestants, sometimes she had trouble expressing herself. But Paula gave the show it's caring angle.
Paula was the one performer on the judges panel.
Ellen, while she's not a singer, certainly knows about performance. And she's FUNNY! Here's her quote about being chosen as the new permanent judge for this season:
"I'm thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol. I've watched since the beginning, and I've always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I'll save from not having to text my vote."
But, will Ellen be the HEART of the show? People do love her on her talk show, and on her series before that, but will America take her into their hearts - Big Gay Out Ellen - on the biggest show on television? I sure hope so!
What do you think? Will Ellen make "American Idol" better?
ps: Don't feel too bad for Paula. She's moving on...

I'm excited to have Ellen on the show. I think she'll had some much needed humor, and yes, heart. I also think that it could stop those STUPID jokes between Ryan and Simon about who's gayer - and for that alone it would be worth it.
The Paula-Simon banter was also growing old, and any credibility she had as offering the performer's perspective was diminished by the blathering way she talked about the performance. I actually prefer Kara who offered actual musical analysis instead of the standard "pitchy."
When Kara came on the show, my first thought was that Paula had reached the glass ceiling (age-wise) and that they were replacing her with eye candy. I think Ellen is good looking, and funny, and not just a young pretty face. So, she scores on all accounts. Yay middle-aged women on TV. Yay gay women on TV. Yay.
Well, I for one, am interested in watching the show for the first time EVER.
I did not like Ellen judging on SYTYCD she was annoying. I think she is going to really annoying on American Idol. Besides why does her perspective as a fan matter more than anyone other fan?
My only objection is that Ellen has no musical background. It's American Idol, shouldn't the judges have some link to the music industry?
