Ricky Martin's Music Video That Will Make Things Better: "The Best Thing About Me Is You"

With Ricky Martin out as an openly gay man (and father!) this made me happy.

Enjoy,

One quibble: I wish there had been a same-sex kiss in there, but there were lots of clearly men-men, women-women couples, and I loved the overall diversity!

What do you think? Am I being too harsh - or is the video still a bit closeted?

Me too,

but you should read comments on Latin countries sites when Ricky talks about homosexuality to get the idea how much homophobia and hate is still there.

I hear you - but exactly BECAUSE there's homophobia out there a same-sex kiss could have really had an impact for the better! Or, no kisses for ANY of the couples would have worked. But to have only ONE kiss, and have it be the straight couple? That was disappointing.

I do think that, since there was a heterosexual kiss in there, the lack of a same-sex kiss kind of softened the point. I understand the decision not to include a same-sex kiss--which I imagine has to do with gaining acceptance gently--but yeah, I think it was a touch... 'cowardly' sounds harsh, but perhaps a bit too gentle and diplomatic?

Better give it some credit too. Some brave steps here too.
Thank you for sharing this, Lee.

Yes, Yuyi, you're right - it IS significant and I do want to praise it... but I wished for more at the same time.
Thanks to you all,

Actually, I am not quite understanding the point of the same sex kiss. I don't do the PDA thing with my husband, so what makes it so important to expect Ricki Martin to do so? I think his song is lovely and the video speaks volumes about equality and value for all choices we make. I am reporting on your site for a YA Lit class I am taking. I have not seen a post in class on a good Gay Teen site and I really have enjoyed yours.

Hi Anonymous Feb 14, 12:14pm

I guess what bothers me is that there was a heterosexual kiss and no same-sex kiss. If you're really trying to make a point about equality, I think that would have spoken volumes. And sadly, the fact that it was missing spoke as well.

Thanks for your kind words about this blog!
