For the first time in 8 long years, I feel hope.
I feel hope for my country.
I feel hope for our world.
I feel hope for my family.

While we still don't know the outcome of California's Prop 8 at this time (and the legal status of my civil marriage), we DO know that the next President of the United States of America will be Barack Obama.
Barack Obama, an African American President, who in listing all the Americans he represents, includes "Gay Americans" in his victory speech.
Barack Obama, a President who wants the Supreme Court to CARE about individuals who are disenfranchised.
Barack Obama, a President who wants to re-ignite the beacon of an America that truly stands for Liberty and Justice for all.
Barack Obama, a President who read the Harry Potter books aloud to his two daughters.
Barack Obama, a President who wants a better future not just for the super-rich, but for all of us - all of us Americans, and All of us in all the countries of the world, as citizens of our Earth.

I thought I saw someone had called yes on 8? I'm only following on NPR and my RSS reader, and no one's really obsessive on 8, as I'm not in California.
And I'm just really happy about Obama on gay. I mean he blathers about the word marriage and church versus state, but really we should just do what Mexico does and remove the power to legally marry someone from religious figures. And not rename anything.
Only 33% of the precincts have reported as of 11pm pacific time - the measure is yes 53% to no 47%, but word is that the way California reports is that smaller outlying (and more conservative areas) report in first, and that the larger, more metropolitan and liberal cities report in later... so it was expected that the initial results wouldn't be so strong in favor of Same-Gender marriage rights continuing. We'll probably know in the morning which way it will go...

It sounds like at 8:00 a.m. EST they still aren't sure, but I'm thinking of you and I keep checking.
But I'm going to have to put aside that concern for a moment to say PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA!

Update at 7:00 AM pacific time on Wednesday November 5th (according to cnn.com):
With 95% of the precincts in California reporting,
Yes on 8 (that would eliminate same-gender marriage) is leading with 5,163,908 votes
No on 8 (those for equality for all, including Gay Americans) is behind with 4,760,336 votes.
52% to 48%... just over 400,000 votes between the two sides...still too close to call.
It is disheartening, but I won't declare this a defeat until I have to - I still have some hope left over!

But I'm not moving anywhere - even if Prop 8 passes, and my legal marriage slips into some kind of limbo/lawsuit realm, I will STAY and FIGHT for my rights. We will CHANGE this country for the better, and the WORLD for the better. President Obama will lead us in a better direction, and all of us fair minded people that believe Gay people should have equal rights will have to rise up and lead the leaders on this one.
It kind of goes back to the conversation about an all-gay high school or an all-bully high school. Every school should be safe for gay kids - if the bullies don't like it, let's make a special school for them. Similarly, if the bigots don't like the inevitable shift towards equal rights for all (including Gay Americans) they're welcome to move to Saudi Arabia, or Iran, or somewhere that's TRULY a theocracy - and maybe then they'll realize that having religious beliefs trump civil rights isn't such a grand idea after all.
I was kidding, of course. But a podcast about the family who moves to Saudi arabia for theocracy's sake might make interesting listening...
In the same way that we can't imagine women without the vote, our girls can't possibly imagine their various friends' parents being stripped of their marital status. Two moms, one mom, two dads, two sets of parents, one dad -- they're growing up in an environment where a loving family of whatever makeup is just taken for granted. We have lots of room for improvement and we have a strong "right" at the moment, but it's a start and I wish at least this start for children (and parents) everywhere.
It was good to come here this morning and see such a positive post. I'm trying to maintain my spirit of optimism. If we can elect Obama, surely we can fix gay marriage too. We shall overcome--again.
