Damned Strong Love: The True Story of Willi G. and Stefan K.

by Lutz Van Dijk

translated by Elizabeth D. Crawford (from the German original)

Set during World War II, Stefan is 14 when his country, Poland, is occupied by the Germans.

Two years later Stefan knows he's gay, and unexpectedly falls in love with a German soldier.

The two young men begin a secret affair. They keep the war at bay for a while, until Willi's unit is sent to Russia. A letter Stefan writes him is intercepted...

When they're discovered by the Gestapo, Stefan is sent to a labor camp - he's there for three years before the war ends and he manages to get free.

This novelized true story includes an afterword by the real Stefan K., who tells us that after the war he never found out what happened to Willi, the soldier he loved.
