Very good questions. Love has meant different things to me at different times in my life. When I was much younger, it was all tied up with lust. So much so that I fell in love a lot for a short period of time. Once that initial attraction wore off, I realized I was not in love.
Today, I have found love and it's a lot different than I thought it would be and yet exactly what I was looking for but couldn't describe in a hundred years - not even to myself.
So love is that thing I yearned for but didn't know what it looked like until it hit me upside the head.
Love is devotion. Whether familial or spousal, devotion survives time, lust, age, anger, and faults. Gay or straight, young or old, "true" love is a devoted love that endures.

I second Sarah, with just one addition.
Love is devotion.
