Very good questions. Love has meant different things to me at different times in my life. When I was much younger, it was all tied up with lust. So much so that I fell in love a lot for a short period of time. Once that initial attraction wore off, I realized I was not in love.

Today, I have found love and it's a lot different than I thought it would be and yet exactly what I was looking for but couldn't describe in a hundred years - not even to myself.

So love is that thing I yearned for but didn't know what it looked like until it hit me upside the head.

I second Sarah, with just one addition.

Love is devotion.
Whether familial or spousal, devotion survives time, lust, age, anger, and faults. Gay or straight, young or old, "true" love is a devoted love that endures.
