House Of Hades - A Character Comes Out As Gay In Rick Riordan's New York Times Best-Selling Middle Grade Fantasy Series!

House of Hades by Rick Riordan

It's the continuing middle grade story of demi-gods (half-gods, half-human) in our world, and in this book,

Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy’s instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through the Gaea’s forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape?

They have no choice. If the demigods don’t succeed, Gaea’s armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.

And on page 292 - a character comes out as gay! (And the reaction they get is pretty awesome.)

My thanks to Yapha, That One Geek Girl, Jacob, and all the other faithful blog readers who let me know with so much enthusiasm and excitement about the gay character coming out in this best-selling series!

It's the fourth book in the Heroes of Olympus series, which is after the five books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series (so it's kind of the 9th book.) Add your review of "House of Hades" in comments!

I was pleased about this, too (the coming out, which I thought was well-done, low-key, and plausible). I liked how it explained some behavior from earlier books, too... So it didn't feel tacked on.

Great seeing you this weekend!

Thanks for the shout out! My favorite part was Jason's response. Couldn't have asked for a better reply.

Hi. I was already a fan of the books and bought House of Hades the first day it was out.
I couldn't believe the amazing and excellent story of one of the most central and popular characters being gay.
This in a book that my 11 year old son is reading!

I am so pleased and it is another good reason to encourage all 10 & 11 year olds to read the series.
They are really good books anyway (if you like this sort of thing).

BTW I am a well read, well educated woman in my 40s. So probably not the typical reader of this book.

I want to add that the way the story develops over the 9 books + other short stories really makes this such a good coming out story but you need to read from the start to appreciate it.

Since the end of book 4 in the pjato series, I had believed that this character was gay. It just made sense with the story line. I was actually very disappointed by that, not because there is anything at all wrong with LGBT characters, but because I thought the author would not end up ever confronting that part of the character's identity. Page 292 of HoH proved me wrong. The character's coming out fit in beautifully with the storyline. It really brought another dimension to the two characters involved, in my opinion. And points to rick Riordon for his bravery to actually confront LGBT identity in his books, especially since they are NY times bestsellers!
