Here's a video interview I did with Laurent about his debut YA novel...
Here's the official synopsis:
Adrian Piper is used to blending into the background. He may be a talented artist, a sci-fi geek, and gay, but at his Texas high school those traits would only bring him the worst kind of attention.
In fact, the only place he feels free to express himself is at his drawing table, crafting a secret world through his own Renaissance-art-inspired superhero, Graphite.
But in real life, when a shocking hate crime flips his world upside down, Adrian must decide what kind of person he wants to be. Maybe it's time to not be so invisible after all, no matter how dangerous the risk.

Intense. Visual. Laurent is an amazing illustrator, teacher, art director and now, a noteworthy author.
While the main character is gay, there is not an adult around who has not felt at least some of these emotions inside high school with all its drama. LOL, in my day, it was the Walter Mitty daydreams of changing a horrid situation so that you look fabulous, today we talk of superheroes.
An extremely well written book for anyone who wants to understand that while many things have changed, high school really hasn't and we still need to stand up for what is right. Have not yet finished the book, wanting to go slowly and savor the writing and the impact. Looking forward to meeting the Adrian at the end of the story.
I enjoyed this book, partly because the drawings inside were really well done and made it something quite unique, partly also because the storyline is compelling and believable. There were no major plot twists and it is not really a high suspense book, but a nice coming of age story. I think it's best suited for pre-teens and teens. There is some violence but it's not too graphic. I recommend it!
