Katy Perry Gets the Trevor Project Hero Award... and says some pretty great things!

Watch this...

I love that the woman who sings "Firework" really gets it.

"Thank you for educating me so that I can educate others."

excellent!

Congrats, Katie!

Well, I was going to say something sarcastic about "hope her boyfriend don't mind it," but she did have some good things to say in the video. I think this article outlines all of her past less than queer friendly incidences pretty well, though: http://www.autostraddle.com/the-trevor-project-gives-katy-perry-an-award-because-gay-visibility-or-something-148848/
I will say this, though:
Other people I would have given this award before Katy Perry:
Lady Gaga (Who has some of her own issues with racism, but not as many as Katy Perry's issues with the queer community.)
Johnny Weir (Maybe not current enough. Maybe I'm just slightly obsessed with Johnny Weir.)
RuPaul
Cyndi Lauper
P!nk
Laura Jane Grace

Wow, Anonymous Dec 13, 2012 4:12pm - thanks for the Autostraddle link. I didn't know that OTHER Katy Perry song. Maybe the idea is to praise her for the good she's done and thus encourage more good?
best,
Lee

This is coming from someone who isn't much of a Katy Perry fan but I'm kind of tired of certain people attitude in the LGBTQ community.

Like she said "thank you for educating me instead of judging me".

I don't see how targeting someone who was clearly brought up in a very conservative family/environment and giving them crap is going to open their mind to our community. I'm not talking about turning a blind eye but actively and *positively* challenging people belief and idea on LGBTQ.

It be real nice if she meant what she said in that speech and at the very least her fans knows she support the issue regardless which is already a good thing.

Now if you ask me if I think other artist or people might have been more deserving, sure. :) But we weren't the one choosing.
